Tris, Techie-ness and Temperatures

TEN DAYS! Holy crap! (Not much more to say along those lines...)

But there's plenty of not-freaking-out-related news. First, the sad news (with a potential silver lining.) Half of my training team left last week for their big race - the Capital of Texas Tri in Austin. Everybody was so excited - and then Austin got drenched with days of rain. And the river swelled, and somewhere a Texan patriarch started loading armadillos and longhorn cattle and triathletes two-by-two into an oversized yacht. And the swim was cancelled, but the rains continued unabated. And so finally, the race organizers cancelled the whole race.

Can you imagine? I was up early and hopped online, hoping to log onto the live webcam and see some familiar faces coming out of the water. Instead, I saw the bad news about the swim, and fifteen minutes later the worse news about the whole race. Of course, it was the right decision - with weather like that, there is absolutely no point to endangering the race participants. But how disappointing for everyone who worked so hard up to that point, who probably barely slept the night before as their minds raced (heh) through last-minute checklists and images of the next morning.

But, as I mentioned, there is good news! It sounds like Team in Training may be trying to get some of our teammates into the EFFD race. How fun would that be?!? The more the merrier! So keep fingers crossed that things work out.

Okay, next on the list? The long awaited rhapsody over my lovely new Neuvation wheels. The link actually goes to the newer model - mine are the R28 Aero2s. I really do just love them. They're light, fast, AND good-looking. They're a lot stiffer than my old wheels, which is especially fun on some of the raised crosswalks around Arlington National Cemetery, where just for fun I'll ride across and go "aaaaahhhh" and crack myself up at the resulting sounds. (Hey, by that point on my way home, I'm gearing up for a big climb home. Whatever cheers me up, I go with. Also, it IS hilarious. You should hear it. Come ride with me.) Anyway, the wheels are just about the best "Happy First Triathlon" present a girl could get, and Pat scored major points with the purchase. If I could wear them on my fingers next to my engagement ring, I just might.

Oh, but? My ride today, with my fabulous new wheels? SO HOT! DC finally woke up to the fact that the city slacked majorly in the hot-and-muggy arena all May, and the last few days have been very much "Welcome back, summer!" Our brick last Saturday was brutal, and on Tuesday I actually got up and did my 75-min run before work - and I start work at 7am, so that's no small feat - just to avoid the afternoon heat. Running that early was actually really nice - the trail was super quiet and I got to watch the sun come up over the city. Tomorrow will be a different story. I can't run in the morning because we have our group swim workout, and the weathermen promise the hottest day of the week yet. So I'll get out there with plenty of fluids, run my shadiest trail, and take it nice and easy. I'll get it done.
